The coronavirus vaccine of the US biotech company Moderna is about to receive emergency approval in the USA. The vaccine cleared the decisive hurdle yesterday: The independent vaccine advisory committee of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) came out in favor of approval. The FDA is expected to approve the vaccine shortly on the basis of this recommendation. This would make it the second Covid 19 vaccine available in the United States.
A week ago, the vaccine from Mainz-based biotech firm Biontech and its U.S. partner Pfizer had already received emergency approval. Mass vaccinations began in the U.S. on Monday.
Moderna had applied for emergency approval from the FDA on Nov. 30. The agency had already expressed no concerns about the vaccine in documents released Tuesday, saying it was highly effective. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) may want to finalize its assessment for approval on Jan. 6. According to results from the pivotal trial, the Moderna vaccine achieved a good 94 percent protection against Covid-19.
